Palo Alto, Ca. -- PARC, A Xerox company, today announced PARC Research Fellow
Van Jacobson’s inaugural induction to the Internet Society’s Internet Hall of
Fame. Jacobson joined PARC in 2006 to lead the Content-Centric Networking (CCN)
program.
The Internet Society, which is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, honored
Jacobson as one of the landmark “Innovators” who made outstanding technological,
commercial, or policy advances and helped expand the Internet’s reach. Others
honored in the first annual Internet Hall of Fame include Vint Cerf and Tim Berners-Lee.
“It’s a great honor to be recognized by the Internet Society, and I’m humbled
to be included with such distinguished company,” Jacobson said.
“We’re proud of Van’s incredible contributions to the development of the Internet,
and are especially pleased to have his leadership at PARC today, where he is continuing
those Internet breakthroughs,” said Stephen Hoover, CEO, PARC. “CCN began with
a big vision. Thanks to Van and the team it has achieved many milestones, gaining
significant traction around the world. This includes a significant grant from
the National Science Foundation for the Named Data Networking (NDN) project –
a consortium of 11 major US universities and PARC for which Van is the ‘network
architect,’ work with Samsung and other commercial clients, and the development
of the CCNx open source community and code release on Android. Another recent
milestone is the newly established Emerging Networks Consortium, a cross-industry
group of companies advancing architectures, applications, and business models
based on CCN.”
The award was announced while the Emerging Networks Consortium (ENC) was holding
its first meeting at PARC on April 23-25, 2012. The invitation-only meeting was
attended by delegates from member companies Alcatel-Lucent, BT, France Telecom-Orange,
Huawei, MACH, Panasonic Corporation, and Samsung, as well as representatives from
the NDN project and PARC scientists and business executives.
Including keynote presentations from industry leaders Jacobson and Juniper Networks
distinguished engineer Colby Barth, the meeting featured three full days of presentations,
panels, demonstrations, use cases, and discussions around CCN. The focus of this
meeting was on industry sectors such as carriers, consumer electronics, and equipment
manufacturers, and on topics that included adoption strategy, interoperability,
and standardization. The full agenda can be viewed at www.parc.com/enc-springsummit2012.
PARC is actively looking to expand the ENC community, which is open to ISPs,
consumer electronics, content providers, OEMs (from telecommunications, enterprise,
healthcare, and defense sectors), Internet services and applications, hardware
and chipset manufacturers, and venture capitalists. The ENC seeks to unite global
industry efforts around CCN, foster standards, and develop coherent vision for
accelerated adoption of CCN for the benefit of member organizations and others.
Prospective members can look forward to an executive summit in the fall, as well
as periodic discussions on developing and implementing technology and business
models around CCN. Please visit www.parc.com/enc or contact consortium@parc.com.
